White-nose Syndrome (WNS) Decontamination

* It should be noted that the Bear River Range is a WNS or Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) positive area. Caving gear, clothes, shoes, and anything used in any cave within the range must be cleaned and decontaminated after the event.

*  It is highly recommended that gear be decontaminated before the event. This includes cleaning of mud and dirt from your caving gear.

* The latest decontamination protocols are at:

Cave Conditions

Cave conditions in the Bear River Range are typical of alpine caves. Temperatures range from the upper 30s to lower 40s for most caves. Depending on the cave, dripping or running water may be encountered. Many of the caves in the region are vertical, with varying levels of difficulty. We've devised the following rating system that will be assigned to each cave:

G: Suitable for all skill levels, children and new cavers welcome. Short approach.

PG: Some tight squeezes, downclimbs, and minor exposed areas may be encountered. Approach may be long depending on cave location.

PG-13: Vertical work is involved, users should know changeovers and downclimbing. Rebelays may be encountered, but will be noted depending on the cave. Approach times vary.

R: Long vertical pitches, excessively wet & cold conditions,  multiple rebelays and general alpine rigging. Experienced cavers only. Approach times vary.

Camping

The campsite for the 2023 Rocky Mountain Regional will be at the American West Heritage Center in Utah's Cache Valley. The location features a large and flat grass camping area, restrooms, and running water. A small pavilion and stage will be utilized for the weekend. The American West Heritage Center is a short walk up the hill from camp for those wanting to experience the history of the area. Most cave trips are within an hour drive from camp and will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
